Private Flute Lessons
"Anita was able to focus on my unique strengths and weaknesses. Not only did she help me to improve my skills, she was also a fantastic role model who instilled within me a love for the music I could create." - Nina Oberman, former high school student
I love to teach and enjoy the opportunity to pass along my musical knowledge. I have experience teaching all ages and skill levels, from beginners both young and adult to advanced students. I have a private studio in my home in Menlo Park and I am also the flute teacher at Logan High School and Alvarado Middle School in Union City. I teach private lessons at both schools along with group lessons with the flutists at AMS. In 2009-2010 I taught private lessons at Mt. Eden High School in Hayward. In 2008 I was a flute instructor at Presidio Middle School in San Francisco, where I worked with flutists and mixed chamber groups in the band program. In the summer of 2008 I was a Faculty Member at the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp in Cazadero, California. For the six weeks of camp, I coached flutists from sixth through twelfth grades, ran sectionals, worked with mixed chamber ensembles, and coordinated the other flute instructors and counselors.
Before coming to San Francisco, I lived in St. Louis for two years and was lucky enough to work with some really wonderful young flutists. I maintained a private flute studio of about 20 students and was also a flute instructor with the Mehlville School District, St. Louis School of Music, and the SMC Music Learning Academy.
I believe that the most important aspect of playing, listening to, and learning music is that it should be fun for all involved. My studio is a non-competitive and relaxed environment where students should feel free to ask questions and make mistakes as they learn. It is very important to me that each student’s individuality is recognized and I tailor lessons to my students’ individual needs. Learning a musical instrument is one of the most enriching experiences you will ever have and I do my best to make it enjoyable as well as challenging.
We will focus on all aspects of music and flute playing in lessons, including:
Tone
Technique
Phrasing
Vibrato
Posture
Music Theory
Music History
Parental involvement is also central to the musical development of any student. I strongly encourage parents to listen to their children play, help them develop good practice habits and generally be involved in their child’s musical progress.
